G5 Makes the List for Second Consecutive Year

BEND, OR – August 24, 2010
News
•	G5, the leading provider of vertical-specific Local Marketing Solutions for mid-market companies, was ranked No. 248 in Inc. magazine’s 29th annual Inc. 500 – a prestigious list of the nation’s fastest growing private companies. The company was ranked No. 32 in the Advertising and Marketing category.
•	G5 posted revenue growth of 1236.1% over a three-year period (2007 to 2009). Cofounded by CEO Dan Hobin and CFO Greg Meier, the five-year old company has grown from 2 employees to 77 and could double its workforce by the end of 2011.
•	This award follows G5’s recent announcement that it received $15 million from Volition Capital, a Boston-based private equity firm, to accelerate development of G5’s Local Marketing Software Platform and enhance G5’s leadership in its core verticals.
•	G5 was also recently named one of the nation’s Best Places to Work by Outside Magazine and the Third Fastest-Growing Private Company in Oregon and southwestern Washington by the Portland Business Journal.

Award Methodology

•	The 2010 Inc. 500 is ranked according to percentage revenue growth when comparing 2006 to 2009. To qualify, companies must have been founded and generating revenue by June 30, 2006. Additionally, they had to be U.S.-based, privately held, for profit, and independent—not subsidiaries or divisions of other companies—as of December 31, 2009. (Since then, a number of companies on the list have gone public or been acquired.)
•	The minimum revenue required for 2006 is $80,000; the minimum for 2009 is $2 million.

Commentary

•	“Fast growth at any time is a big achievement; fast growth during the past few years is just short of miraculous,” said Inc. editor Jane Berentson. “The Inc. 500 consists of these just-short-of miraculous companies, the ones that through ingenuity and ambition have increased revenue, hired employees, and grown fast in difficult economic times.”
•	“We’re honored to have made the Inc. 500 list again this year,” said G5 CEO Dan Hobin. “Our success is predicated by the results we deliver for our customers.”

By Ty McMahan

One of the most important objectives for a start-up is to identify a solid target market. For G5 Marketing Inc., that target market is the self-storage business – a bit peculiar for a company that helps businesses market their services online.

While local-advertising competitors like Yodle Inc. and ReachLocal Inc. assist all sorts of small and medium-sized business, from dive bars to dermatologists, G5 is focused on just three verticals – self-storage, multifamily housing and senior living.

How the company went down that path is somewhat random. Chief Executive Dan Hobin’s brother owns a self-storage business and encouraged his sibling to steer his company’s marketing services in that direction. Hobin found the area to be potentially lucrative for G5.

“They are big spenders in yellow page advertising, and we now own a big share of that vertical,” Hobin said.

Coincidently, it was a self-storage customer with an investment in apartments who encouraged the company to enter its other two verticals. Hobin admits that his sector focus is unique, but he says the company has experienced success here and continues to grow.

“If you have a $50 million apartment building to pay for, you’re going to spend more on advertising than a plumber who has a $17,000 truck to pay for,” Hobin said, referring to the multifamily housing market.

G5 is on pace for $12 million in revenue for 2010, Hobin said, and the company just closed a $15 million round of funding led by growth equity firm Volition Capital.

G5 provides local businesses with a way to manage, measure and optimize local marketing. The platform currently serves more than 160 customers and more than 2,400 properties.

Hobin said the company will eventually pursue other customer segments, but for the time being they’re fairly content with a proof of concept and fresh capital to bank millions from mini-storage.

BEND, OR and BOSTON, MA – August 10, 2010

G5, the leader in vertical-specific Local Marketing Solutions, announced today that it has closed its first institutional round of financing. The $15 million investment was led by Volition Capital, a growth equity firm that invests in high-potential, founder-owned technology companies. The proceeds will be used to accelerate development of G5’s Local Marketing Software Platform and to enhance G5’s leadership in its core verticals. Roger Hurwitz, Managing Partner at Volition, and Sean Cantwell, Principal at Volition, will join G5’s Board of Directors.

“Volition’s partnership is a great vote of confidence in G5’s mission to deliver the most sophisticated local marketing technology platform in our select verticals,” said G5 CEO Dan Hobin. “The Volition team has significant experience working with high-growth SaaS businesses like ours, and we’re thrilled to have Roger and Sean joining the G5 team.”

The G5 Platform currently serves more than 160 clients and over 2,400 properties within the Multifamily Housing, Self Storage and Senior Living sectors. G5 helps companies like Trammel Crow Residential, Riverstone Residential, Greystar, The Carlyle Group, Silverado Senior Living and Metro Self Storage leverage the Web to increase revenue, reduce ineffective marketing spend and increase net operating income.

The funding follows yet another record-breaking quarter for G5. In Q2 2010, the company posted its 20th consecutive quarter of record revenue. G5 attributes its success to capitalizing on the paradigm shift in local advertising, where businesses are increasingly transitioning their marketing dollars online. According to Borrell Associates, Local Online Advertising is projected to grow from $8.9 billion to $16.4 billion by 2013.

“G5 is constantly evaluating new technologies and services that will drive better business results for our clients,” said G5 CFO Greg Meier. “Volition is an ideal partner to provide us with the guidance and resources required for our next stage of growth.”

“G5 provides a compelling value proposition and measurable ROI with its holistic solution that combines software, marketing and vertical expertise,” said Roger Hurwitz. “We are excited to partner with such a strong entrepreneurial team that is well-positioned for long-term success given its unique offering and focus on delivering great results to its customers.”

A ride around the office is not unusual at G5 Search Marketing in Bend. Freedom is what employees say keeps them happy.
Ranking in the top 50 best places to work nationwide, G5, also one of the fasted growing companies nationwide, says they listen to what their 60 employees like .
“We are incorporating walking and outside meetings, we have annual baseball games that we attend as a company, with our families. We look for opportunities to incorporate our employee’s outside passions and integrate that with the company culture,” says Keeli Hyde with G5.
G5 ranked 42nd of the list complied by Outside Magazine.
Bend snagging 2 of the top fifty on the list.
The Outdoor Association and a research firm The Best Companies Group surveyed employees about policies, practices and benefits at work.
Number 41 on the list also in Bend Ruff Wear, a company that manufactures dog gear, primarily for the outdoors.
Greg Freyberg, the retail brand planner, has been with Ruff Wear for a year and half and says he notices a difference from the day to day practices at work compared to previous jobs.

“We take regular days off together. We spend days in the field testing our products, with our dogs, in groups and by ourselves. We learn a lot about how our products work and it’s that focus on the outdoors and the focus on the folks here and how the product performs makes ruff wear the kind of company it is,” says Freyberg.
Both companies say while many are just thankful to have a job these days, it’s still important to keep employees positive, to keep the product quality high.

Tech Company Promotes Lifestyle Balance to Fuel Future Growth

BEND, OR – April 5, 2010 – G5 Search Marketing (www.G5searchmarketing.com), the leading provider of Local Marketing Solutions for mid-market companies, today was named to Outside Magazine’s (www.outsideonline.com) third annual “Best Places to Work” list. G5 was ranked No. 42 out of 50 selected companies. The full list and related story will be published in the May issue of Outside magazine, available on newsstands April 13, 2010.

Outside’s “Best Places to Work” list was compiled with the help of the Outdoor Industry Association (www.outdoorindustry.org) and Best Companies Group (www.bestcompaniesgroup.com). The year-long selection process began with an outreach effort that identified a wide range of nonprofit and for-profit organizations with at least 15 employees working in the United States.

Participating companies were then sent confidential employee-satisfaction surveys and employer questionnaires to collect information about benefits, compensation, policies, job satisfaction, environmental initiatives, and community outreach programs. All results were analyzed by Best Companies Group experts, who selected the 50 companies that strive to enhance their employees’ enjoyment of active endeavors, environmental and social involvement.

“These 50 companies come from a vast array of industries but they’re all following the same enlightened path,” said Michael Roberts, Executive Editor of Outside. “They’re successful businesses in a challenging economy precisely because they support a proper work-life balance. They know that benefits like on-site gyms and fitness classes, reimbursements for ski passes and sports racing fees, and support for community service efforts during work hours make their employees happier and thus more productive.”

“We’re excited and proud to be one of the only technology companies on Outside’s list,” said G5 CEO Dan Hobin. “Our employees are committed to delivering the best software platform and services in the marketplace. But they’re also committed to passions outside the company – family, friends, outdoor activities, the community and environmental causes.” This combination, according to Hobin, has helped employees sustain lifestyle balance and the company achieve four consecutive years of triple-digit revenue growth.

G5 offers a wellness program that includes shortened work hours on Fridays during the summer months, paid participation in various athletic events, flex time for powder ski days, rewards for green commuting, “wheel spins” for recreational park passes and company-supplemented gym memberships. The company’s goals include community support, measured by corporate monetary donations and 100% employee participation in community service – during and/or outside office hours.

“We value our employees,” said Hobin. “Lifestyle balance is a strategy that works for personal growth and business success.”
